Valentine Comes and Go
“Nyahhh!”
Waking up around 4a.m. with cold sweats down her back, a shivering chill down her spine was not Emma’s favourite wake-up call. The dream she had, she wouldn’t call it a nightmare. It was not scary. It was disturbing. She pondered. It was long time ago since she had such a dream. Exorcism - it was always about one. It was not scary. No, not at all but it was disturbing…disturbingly sad. Emma looked at down at herself as she sat on her bed, her knees clutched together. She remembered waking up on the wrong side of the bed, without her dear pillow – the one she hugged to sleep every night.
“No wonder I had the dream…”
It was February 15th, a day after Valentine, a few hours to be exact. As always, this year was a bit lonely. Ironically, she expected that while everyone else would be celebrating. The last text message she received last night was from a high school friend. It read: Happy Valentine Day de…
It made her smile. It made her cry. Ryan was at home playing games. Caine worked overtime. At least she figured the similarities between both – they could not express their feelings right. Men. Ryan needed her by his side. He told her so. However, there was a certain spark missing from their relationship. She loved him but she could never bring herself to share her innermost feelings with him. She was hesitant at times. She was doubtful. As for Caine, she only wished he would tell her the truth. It was a wish impossible to fulfil, not even by a powerful wishing genie or the fairy godmother. Caine was unlike the others. He was older. And because of that, he’s a reserved guy. Curse those ages! Emma was in her late teens. Caine was a matured man. She rides the roller coaster into adulthood. Growing up is not easy.
She has yet to learn more.
There would be more winding roads to diverge her from the one road.
She would have to travel down the roads of Career, Opportunity, Adventure and Love – all which would bring her to one end – Life.
She would have to find an intersection between all four.
She would learn to let go.
She will grow up eventually.
As for her Guardians, she has no intentions to discard them.
He was reserved.
He didn’t want to hurt her.
He promised her he would never find another.
Unfortunately, she doubts that now.
He did something that gave her hopes. False hopes.
He said something that made her smile. Well, the smile is cracking.
He only needed to say it.
He just has to tell her – stay or go.
He didn’t have to make it so complicated.
Why can’t he see that she’s in love?
Valentine was just another day. It was another day for her to dive into the depths of her memories. There, she would reminisce on all the events associated with her love life – sweet. A rustling on her bed distracted her.
“Oh, Gabe, it’s you.”
“You’re alright, milady?”
“I’m fine. I had a dream.”
“What dream?”
“The exorcism – it’s the same girl, Gabe. It was a quiet, sad exorcist. I’m not sure I could even call it one. She looked at me, Gabe. She looked at me. She was crying. I slept on the wrong side of the bed again.”
Her Guardian drew himself closer to her. Gently he reached out his hands and in the dark morning, he hugged her tight. He stroked her hair softly.
“You know, Em, don’t give up on Caine. Just loving him makes you happy, right?”
She nodded in silence.
“Then love him. One day he’ll realize you weren’t joking.” He stroked her hair, strand by strand and whispered words in her ears. But by the time he realizes, he thought, it will be the time you’re slipping away from him. You will remain a memory to him, one he will regret because it did not last. Unless he corrects it right. Maybe I can arrange Luc to do something but of course, you would send me away… Don’t worry; I’ll make sure you won’t get hurt much.
