God Laughs

We’re all walking on quicksand
When we’re busy makin’ our plans, God laughs
We’re all walking on quicksand
When we think that we understand, God laughs

“Gabe?”

Emma watched her Guardian humming to Delta Goodrem’s ‘God Laughs’. If anyone knew her taste for songs, it would be Gabriel himself. After all, Emma was actually drinking from his cup. She would love the songs he loved. Her eyes fixed on him, Gabe smiles whenever he’s humming, she thought. Gabriel smiled all the time. Humming to his songs however, there was a serene look on his face. He was reflecting heaven.

The song replayed itself, filling the air with a peaceful breeze. It made Emma think. As she sat entertaining Natalie, her mind wondered on God. If God was looking down on her right now, what would he think? It was a funny thing to ask about. Cradling Natalie in her arms she said softly to her,

“Perhaps He’ll think he brought a funny girl to the world, one who would never grow up.” The baby girl stared wide-eyed at her aunt.

“He would think you’re a very interesting creation, what’s with all your mood swings.”

Gabriel had come to sit with her. She blushed hearing his comment.

“You really think so?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

Yes, Emma thought, perhaps He will think so. The song reminded her of the truth that all believers would believe in, no matter what religion one belongs to. Things don’t always go one’s way. When we thought we’ve had it all, we would realize that somehow something was missing and strangely enough, when we figured what it was, sometimes our worldly possessions dimmed in value compared to that one thing. For Emma, it was to stay around the guy she loved the most. Maybe God will say to His angels that she’s one messed up creation that she was all about love, love, love and more love.

Maybe the angels would laugh too.

Emma laid Natalie in her cot. She has been thinking on her relationship with Ryan. Finally, she thought, she knows what was going wrong between them and why her love for him seems to fade away. It was the lack of communication. Ryan was a damn good listener. He listened to her intently for countless times. But she was the one who did all the talking. He told her he didn’t know what to say, that his mind was blank.

That hit her hard.

It could be a case of wrong choice of words but Emma still thought it was cruel to tell your girlfriend your mind was blank when you’re with her or when she’s talking with you. Or it could simply be, in her case, she had her eyes on Caine all this while yet never realized it?

Caine had been working in another district before.

We’re all walking on quicksand
When we’re busy makin’ our plans, God laughs
We’re all walking on quicksand
When we think that we understand, God laughs

True, she and Ryan had talked about a future together. All of a sudden, all the dreams came down. She tilted her head, looking at the sky. “You know,” she said, “God, you’re a very cunning person. I get it. I get it. We could never completely plan for ourselves, right? We could never understand completely, right? There’s always something unexpected, right?”

“Or else you wouldn’t believe.” Gabe interrupted.

“Heavenly Father,” she whispered with a smile. “Thank you. You work wonders.”

Hey! I’m always so confused by your blog, never sure whats real and whats creative writing. But there’s one thing I can tell you, just because he says his mind is a blank, doesn’t mean its completely blank … more like … it’s hard to put into words what he’s thinking, or its just not something worth even saying. At least, if he’s anything like me.

I’m the opposite from you in this situation, my bf does all the talking while I’m like “my mind is full of nothing”.

I hope things with you and your guy(s) work out :)
